RIO DE JANEIRO — About 50 Brazilian demonstrators are gathered outside a police station in Rio de Janeiro demanding to know the whereabouts of the mortal remains of a slum dweller who disappeared while in police custody in mid-June.
Bricklayer Amarildo de Souza was last seen June 14 when police picked him up for questioning in Rio de Janeiro’s Rocinha slum.
Many demonstrators are carrying photos of Souza and posters asking: “Where are Amarildo’s mortal remains.”
The case sparked outrage in Brazil, with protesters demanding that police be held accountable in Souza’s disappearance.
Prosecutors have charged 25 police officers on suspicion of torturing and killing him.
Investigators believe the officers later discarded Souza’s remains, which have not been found. Police say he left the station alive and on foot (Link).
